yeah, after sending those comments about Nabokov I was gonna add some comments about understanding those feelings as a writer confronting readers. I've been to quite a few readings over the past several weeks and the questions annoy **Me,** I hate to think what the authors themselves may have thought. If the statement was out of context and made him seem worse than he was, I can accept that. I'll have to read Nabokov more, then (will probably have to pretty soon :) ). Eh, Lolita (the book), well. . .I recongize its artistic merit, I just don't like it. Really, the merit was lost on me till the end, and then that changed the whole view of the rest. If I were to reread it now knowing the end...I don't know. Jim PS to Scottie -- Read an interesting News piece saying the comparisons to the Serbs and Hitler is overblown rhetoric made to garner support for the war. I was thinking about posting it. But, at the same time, it did admit the Serbs were indeed guilty of criminal activity with regard to the Kosovans (who did start the conflict by demanding independence). To me, the area should never have been "one" country. I think Croatia/Bosnia, Yugolsavia, and Kosovo were artificially made a single entity first through conquest, then through a superior Soviet military presence that demanded unity and peace. When that machine collapsed, individual states started vying for independence. "The written word is a power of such magnitude that only pedants would try to reduce it to rules.
