I know exactly how you feel about realizing your own mortality, and I completely agree
with everything you said. Shouldn't we be enjoying life rather than loosing what
innocence we have left?
Kids at my school, I think 3 actually, have been arrested for threats. Retorts when
the police got them were basically, "Just because you arrest me, doesn't mean it's not
going to happen." They threatned that the school would be 'blasted to shreads' on
Thursday; needless to say, many of my friends have already said that they won't be
coming to school on that day. I don't know what to make of the threats, but all I
know is that they are not to be taken lightheartedly and there is no excuse for doing
so. Yes, they could be mere threats and essentially harmless, but what if we all
thought that and one day the same thing as in Columbine occurrs at my school, your
school, your children's school?

i apologize for the fact that this has nothing to do with salinger...
i don't think we are letting the shooting at columbine consume our lives...
speaking as a high school student, it is not a small or pleasant thing to
realize your own mortality.
obviously an incident like the one at columbine is not preventable, but it is
a bit unsettling to suddenly feel unsafe in a place that you never felt was
the least bit dangerous. of course it's going to be a topic of conversation.
ease up.
