It's very understandable that Tim should be nostalgic
for a long gone version of his home town. But why
should a youthful Brit (as I presume from her address)
like Melinda & an ancient Scot like myself who has not
so far set foot in the place experience something
of the same?
Obviously in my own case it began with the impact
of buoyancy, vitality & optimism that the arrival
of the GIs made on these islands in the 40s.
(Remember, Esme & I could well have bumped into
each other on the platform of Paddington Station
in 1943.) But I have only to hear Tommy Dorsey
slide into the opening bars of 'Getting Sentimental...'
& I'm a goner - swept away in an avalanche of Norman
Rockwell bobby-soxers, soda fountains, Studebakers,
pom-pommed skaters, drinks at Club 21, the crowds
in Union Station (or was it Grand Central?) waiting
to see Judy & Bob reunited under the clock ...
Some of the best days of my life.
Scottie B.
