To those fish who missed today's Fresh Air (sadly without Terry Gross
today),

Today's show was a rebroadcast of "an interview with film director Francis
Ford Coppola recorded at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Film critic Roger
Ebert will talk with Coppola about the re-edited version of this 1979 epic
film Apocalypse Now. The redux Apocalypse Now includes an additional 49
minutes of material. It is currently showing in New York and L.A. and opens
in other cities over the next couple of weeks." (according to
http://freshair.npr.org/).
Near the end of the programme there is a short clip from a 1997 interview of
Francis Ford Coppola (with Terry Gross!) In it he meantions how he dropped
out of military school, sold his uniform and wandered around New York for a
few days at around the age of 16. (Sound Familar?) As I'm thinking about
how similar this experience is to that of our dear Holden Mr. Coppola goes
out and says it himself. He told Terry that a shortly after the incident a
friend handed him a copy of Catcher. He then wrote a letter to JDS
explaining that he wanted to be a film maker and asking if he could have the
film rights to Catcher. I don't seem to recall any mention of this on the
list in '97 (yes, I was on the list then).

Will and Chris: do you have a letter from Mr. Coppola? It seems he's
already written one, perhaps he would like to replicate it or else write a
new one?
