Robbie is, of course, quite right. There's a vital difference
between longing to GO & satisfaction at HAVING GONE.
For the true enthusiast, after all, there's always a war
somewhere. I can offer, I suppose, one teeny extenuation.
The month of Suez & Hungary, I was given the choice between
a good job in Canada & a short commission in the RAF.
Prompted by dreams of glory (& a rather glamorous uniform)
I had no difficulty in choosing the latter.
What unbelievably marvellous romps we had. Lots of people
killed, loads of funny flying, tall tales at the bar, sporting nights
in the hospital Mess .... Four years of it. Dammit, it felt just like
The Dawn Patrol.
But no. War it wasn't.
