kim, it's pretty standard to use Salinger's effect on pop culture to 
ignore the literary qualities of the work. A while ago, Janet Malcolm 
wrote an article in the NY Review of Books that explains a bit how 
the literary value of Salinger's work has not been seen as clearly as 
it might...there's no denying Salinger is an important part of our 
culture, but to keep him in the media as a "recluse" by publishing 
snippets of viewings and tellings is sad when you think about how 
rereading any of his books usually creates literary thinking that
