Thanks for the explication of how this works. It's good for people to
know the details, so they can avoid getting hit. At work we have been
battling this for what seems like an eternity. And it keeps going on
over and over as these viruses mutate.

If you're stuck using Windows, please be sure to keep your machine
patched by using "Windows Update" regularly and/or checking the Microsoft
download site for critical patches.

If people had applied patches, then they would not have been hit by the
big round of nasties we've been seeing for more than a week.

Our ISP (panix.com) is one of the best in the business. They took
aggressive action to filter out infected messages, but there was still a
lot of congestion on the site, so I noticed a bit of a lag between the
time mail was sent and when it was delivered. But even under a heavy
load, panix managed to keep up with things.
