salinger biographies have polluted me. made me KNOW something. i spit out
this piece of apple! it's where i remember reading that he ditched the
caulfields because they were a dead end for salinger.

well yeah, i agree the characters get revised, the following name changes for
instance

kenneth to (bowling?) allie (to seymour, to teddy, to seymour?)
vincent to d.b. (to buddy?)

i also agree about what you say about the caulfields being ditched because
they were dead ends and the glasses opened up some horizon for salinger.
though, i don't know why necessarily. i'm assuming he could have done
anything with the caulfields since all the public REALLY saw was CITR. he
could've done prequels like hapworth, for instance. so why the surname
change? change of heart? starting to lean to the east and wanted to be
clever?

I suspect this is partially true, but I also suspect the characters get
revised a bit as they go along. This reminds me of the Franny vs. Zooey
discussion Kim prompted some time back with a link to an Updike article,
which I can't find now. blah.

I think Salinger conceived his characters with varying degrees of
completion and success, but do agree he could have initially conceived
them beyond the first story in which they appear. I think the Caulfield
family was a proto-Glass family that Salinger had to abandon because he
couldn't do anything else with them.
