well yeah, i agree the characters get revised, the following name changes
for
instance

kenneth to (bowling?) allie (to seymour, to teddy, to seymour?)
vincent to d.b. (to buddy?)

i also agree about what you say about the caulfields being ditched because
they were dead ends and the glasses opened up some horizon for salinger.
though, i don't know why necessarily. i'm assuming he could have done
anything with the caulfields since all the public REALLY saw was CITR. he
could've done prequels like hapworth, for instance. so why the surname
change? change of heart? starting to lean to the east and wanted to be
clever?
