kenneth died in ocean.

wouldn't d.b. be a proto-buddy? being a writer and all?

i'd say that holden turned into franny.

since the majority of the public only had CITR, he COULD have started fresh
with the caulfields if something inside catcher didn't paint him in the
corner. hardly anybody knew (and nobody now hardly knows) about ocean, peter
pans, mayonnaise, crazy, rebellion.

he changed the surname for a reason is what i'm thinking. it's a very raw
thought. but building on that should be easy, yes? for what reason would he
change the surname?

I think he painted himself into a corner. There's some ambiguity about
Allie's death in "Ocean," but I think the reader has a pretty good idea
about why he ran off to the ocean like he did. It wasn't a surprise
suicide, as was Seymour's. Next, who are you left with? DB, a
hollywood writer, maybe a proto-Zooey, but I think the mere fact of his
profession makes him damned to be shallow in Salinger's mind. There's
Holden, whose angst was laid out in Catcher....but where do you go from
there? Then there's Phoebe, who could turn into either a Franny or a
Boo-Boo (I lean toward the latter). All you really have are three kids,
and only one has any real possibilities for development.

Easier to just drop the whole thing and start over -- bigger family this
time, bigger mystery about the death, dead end characters can just be
ignored.
