daniel, i lost your post re why/what i want to know.

just find jds's stories & life interesting. they and
he are a puzzle.

you're right, rilke wrote several poems about the
buddha. none on hinduism.

attached mail follows:

Kim, what do you want to know, and why do you want to know it? If you
answer those two questions then your uncertainty of his birth can be
converted into praise or damming. Didn't Rilke write some poems on Buddhism
and Hinduism?

Last night I took up Poetic Diction by Owen Barfield. I had this book on my
shelf for over an year always intending a soon read. Last night I was
scanning a shelf and my eyes ran across it's spine and I pulled it out, it
has the sub title of A Study of Meaning so naturally it went to the top of
my reading stack. I read the Forward by Howard Nemerov and I was hooked, he
has a little line addressed to the readers of the Forward, "...maybe the
only preface worth having would be one such as I saw in a manual of
Buddhism: that said, in effect, if you have read this far, throw the book
away, it's not for you."; in order for possession to be successful the old
soul must be evacuated before the body can accommodate you. There is
'looking' into a 'text' (story) and there is speaking to it. There are two
methods as Jim says; one invasive and the other communicative. One gives
knowledge the other meaning.
Daniel

the paucity of hard facts re him and his work is
frustrating. i'm not even sure he was born....
