andrew,

i think the most convincing argument for frannie and lane's bedroom life
is when lane tells frannie -- right when she wakes up after fainting --
that he can get up to the room where he is staying somehow and that it's
been "too goddamn long between drinks." and asks her "you know how long
it's been?...way the hell early last month, wasn't it?"

hmm, until rereading that part with pregnancy in mind, i'd never really
thought of it, dismissed it as a silly explanation for people who weren't
interested in finding out what was *really* wrong with frannie. but that
"last month" comment has me thinking. however, in the final analysis i
agree with will and others that it's probably just salinger's way of
making us think twice before definately deciding on what's wrong with
frannie.
