Tim shocks me with his wordly ways and writes:

The *Beauty* books! Dog that I am, I *love* those things. Rice used the
approprriately faux-French A.N. Roquelaure for those little masterpieces.

Speaking of the Maynard thing (sort of) -- is it just me or is *Vanity
Fair* getting to be even more of a gossippy scandal sheet than ever? In
the last several months they seem to be particularly revelling in the celeb
gossip stuff...

And speaking of the *Beauty* books (sort of) -- a friend recently announced
to me that she is no longer going to read books in the bathroom because it
promotes the spreading of e-coli bacteria and increases the likelihood of
colds. Tell me this is nothing to be worried about -- it would put and end
to many of my most productive reading hours. I don't think I could live
without those precious moments -- many otherwise unfinishable novels have
been conquered thanks to bathroom reading.

Fighting the good fight, I remain,
