Mmmmmmmmm, what can you say?

Listened to his debut album the other day, Closing Time. I have had periods
when I’ve thought the album is just somewhat too smooth and without the
later edge, but when he’s calling Martha (long distance) and sings “This is
ol’ Tom frost, […] don’t worry ‘bout the cost”, I give in. Smiling my
sentimental smile superimposed with my “rhyming can be too much
sometimes”-smile. I can just picture the 23-year old Tom writing this song,
picturing himself being old, still remembering his love from The Wilder
Days.

And his voice, already thick from the drinking. The Cohen of “Songs of
Leonard Cohen” just isn’t the same guy as the thick-throated man of today,
but good ol’ Tom has never been young in his voice. Only in his mind.
