I should clarify my earlier points about language and rules - in that I too
agree that language is an ever-changing beast. There's nothing more
annoying and illogical than those pedagogues who whinge their little
intellects off worrying about the loss of the word `gay' from the English
language. It just proves how little they know about the true nature of
language. And it's not a new phenomenon, have a look at the character of
Holofernes in Shakespeare's `Love's Labour's Lost', complaining about
people saying `calf' and not `carf' , 400 years ago! What I object to is
enforcing the idea of freeness onto minds before they have understood the
idea of discipline. To me, that's just as phony as setting rules; in fact
it's really just substitution of a new set.
