Hey...I never heard that :)  Here are some addresses tho...

For the New Yorker, there's nothing said in the Writer's Market about only 
accepting from Agents.  I'd just bet you have a better chance through an 
agent.  BUT, it does say to send your piece to the appropriate editor -- 
Fact, Fiction or Poetry -- and to this address:

I'd also try Story Magazine -- that's just as reputable as the New Yorker 
even though the circulation is much smaller.
