We always used "whinging" in NY, when I was growing up.  I thought it
was just an Irish expression.  A bit of digging shows its first use in
1150 A.D. and quite a few other citations from Irish literature.  So, I
guess it has a good pedigree.  (Source: OED, 2nd ed.)
