While I have only posted twice, I've come to associate a definite
fondness with some of those who post more regularly. So I've been
a tad taken aback by the veritable acidity of one correspondent's
submissions of late. Mr Bowman struck me as an altogether
sharp-witted yet strangely loveable character whom one might
wish to cuddle close to one's bosom and press his furry little
tummy so that he may say something clever. Yet now I see this
darker, more cynical side, which when it makes proclamation, literally
oozes with sarcastic ire. Not that I object, it's highly
amusing, and the twist obviously crafted with great care, I was
simply caught off guard as it fell outside my preconception. Perhaps
this will teach me - as someone who displays great annoyance at
those who would reduce all things to the most common, simplistic
constructs - to practice what I would (if necessity did not dictate
a strict adherence to the concept of non-moralistic comportment)
preach. {gosh - that's a long sentence, I bet I know a person who
would heap biting reproach on such poor use of the English language.. ;)

Elsewhere: I must say that all of this 'politic' is rather difficult
to understand here in Australia. A duopoly of political power also
exists in our fair country, yet most would agree that which ever way
we vote we are getting the same thing (I would make the gross generalisation
that politicians are inherently disliked and disbelieved by most
Australians). A friend of mine commented the other day that if the
Prime Minister were to die in office he would be given about thirty
seconds at the beginning of the nightly bulletin, before we moved on to
the really important issue of who is leading the latest Test Match (cricket
that is). This concept of dedicating night after night of news headlines
to the latest manoeuvring in the slow stumble to the White House is
all rather foreign (pun intended), yet at the same time alluring - rather
like watching a car crash in slow motion.

Something Salinger, something Salinger.. err.. someone did ask me how
a mailing list is supposed to continually discuss a topic which has not
altered in forty years, I guess this email answers that, but I do
wonder just how many closet Salinger fans among the literary elite are
waiting for him to die so that they may proclaim him a misunderstood
genius, as opposed to a pontificating populist.

If you managed to get this far, I thankyou for your time.

For once, I write in a genuinely detached spirit
    of enquiry.

I'm quite amazed by the uninhibited abuse being
heaped on General Powell. This is quite simply
