i would like to clear up, if clearing up is necessary, what my views on
colin powell and the gulf war are. i do not believe the gulf war was a
failure. it was, quite obviously, a (literally) smashing success. wars are
not fought, as much as clinton and friends would like to believe, to save
peoples lives. they are fought to achieve political, economical, and
military goals. this war was (gladly) no exception. it was, as scottie
said, a limited campaign with obvious goals, and it was carried through with
swiftness and resolve. furthermore, obviously gen powell deserves quite a
bit of credit for that success, being, as he was, the chairman of the joint
chiefs of staff at the time. furthermore i think referring to him as "uncle
tom," could be construed as meaning he is some kind of race traitor, or
white wanna be, as is often the use of that phrase. that is ridiculous.
however, revering gen powell as if he is some minor diety, or a saint, and
heaping so much praise and admiration on him for doing his job, is a little
far fetched. admittedly he did his job well, and there are many men who
would not have been as successful at it, there are many men, and women, who,
in his position in 1991, would have botched the job horribly. but that's
why he had the job, right? the point i think i am getting at is that he was
a fine general, capable of crushing an inferior enemy with little loss of
his own forces, however, that does not make him an able statesman. perhaps
he will be the finest secretary of state we've ever had, perhaps he will go
on to become president, and be the best at that too, but that remains to be
seen. meanwhile, he has received his appointment, i think, because of his
name and his popularity, because of his status as a "hero" in the minds of
the american people. however i believe his credentials make him (perhaps)
the perfect candidate for secretary of defense, not state, and i, for one,
would like to see him in that post.
i would like to note that the dems offered him the job (sec of state) a few
years ago, and he refused, because, as he said later, their foreign policy
was "amorphous."
finally i'd like to say that the post that started all this was one i made a
few days ago, wherein the reference to gen powell was an aside, added at the
last minute, so i'm kind of surprised it has inspired so much heated debate
(while the rest of that post has been ignored).

ps i think all of this talk about diversity is ridiculous. i await,
patiently, the day when who gets the job is a decision based solely on
merit, no more, no less, and giving any particular job to a woman or
"minority" (would they be a minority if we didn't consider them one? if we
were all just humans, would it matter?) would garner no praise nor raise any
eyebrows.
