I agree with Jim in imagining that Arthur's wife is the lady in the
bed with Lee...the ambiguity gives the story an edge when readers are
not certain about relationships, but without at least being able to
imagine that the two men are connected through the lady in question,
the story would have much less meaning than we've come to expect from
every piece in the Nine Stories.And yes, I've always thought that
"green my eyes" was a direct reference to seeing the world through
jealous eyes...I've experienced that point of view myself (not
proudly) and I think Salinger's portrayal is insightful and shows his
craft as a writer. The world of jealous feeling that is created in
the short dialog of the story is very powerfully enacted and it seems
not to make as much sense if the lady next to Lee is not connected to
the story's plot. will
