A Great & Good Friend to all of us recently sent me
a article by a bloke called Crystal (no, not Glass) extolling
rather the vibrancy & vigour that English & language
in general has gained from the new cyber media.

Don’t worry, he says, about lower case, acronyms,
abbreviations, grammatical short-cuts & so on. They all
add crackle to our expressions & extend our sensibilities
    generally.

I disagreed. I’ve always thought clarity would remain
the queen of the battle. And still do.

But I must admit, Suzanne, your new customer gives me pause.
There’s an authority & confidence about these posts that
makes the shrinking courtesies of Bananafish look pretty
    sad & effete.

The only thing is, what on earth makes you think it’s a chap?
Nowadays, what male – as he checks the correctness of his
opinions, frets over his personal daintiness, changes the baby
& brings in the washing to the ironing board – could ever
express himself with such unquestioning style?

No, no. She’s very big & very black & obviously intends
one day to be one mothering great writer. If I were you,
    I’d cultivate her.

    Scottie B.
