i subscribed to the digest instead of the individual emails and the
majordomo said an introduction "will help your fellow subscribers get to
know you and to hear what interests you about J.D. Salinger's work."

well, now that makes sense! i didn't really follow what the use of all the
reintroductions a couple of months ago. i didn't see why i needed to know
someone is from salt lick, idaho, as opposed to say, tin mill, texas.

what interests me about salinger's work is catcher and nine stories. more
abstractly speaking, what interests me is that you don't have to be a phd
in literature to feel these stories as living, breathing works of art.
fiction doesn't often hold my interest -- i often am too aware i'm reading
something made up -- but these books do hold my interest. they also speak
to a lot of people, especially catcher. it seems like a lot of teens who
are non-readers find catcher to be the first book they really embrace,
really love, and i think salinger shows what an artist he is by grabbing
such a wide range of people: whether the person is a reading-adverse youth
or a literature phd. that is art! to me, humor is also an art, and if you
have to explain a joke, it isn't as funny.. something like that seems to
apply here.

speaking of which, catcher in the rye and nine stories, also feature great
humor, especially catcher. you're in on the joke, never made fun of except
maybe in a good natured humble way. its so wonderful!

about me, i fall between the undereducated youth and the phd.

dodging the upper case,
suzanne
