'... Ian Hamilton passed on Thursday. He was 61 ...'
This is a bit disillusioning. I always thought the Ian Hamilton
I met in a London pub in 1956 was the perpetrator of the book
about Salinger so excoriated by the devout (but of course much
enjoyed by the more discriminating.) The bloke I met was introduced
as a poet & then Literary Editor of the Spectator (by Brian Inglis -
whom I'd known since my Dublin days & who certainly WAS general
editor.)
I have to admit I never came across him again & he was a bit faceless
in that I have no real memory other than of a quiet, polite chap -
but who must have been rather older than the still quite callow 27
year old I then was. (OK, still am.) The relevant Hamilton must
still have been at school that day.
Pity. I don't have so many scalps that I can afford to lose even one.
