sundeep,

right you are in the source as well as the notion that it is a delightful
book.

as for the relevant detail of his dwelling in Westport with his dog? I was
actually referring to his telling of how he was intentionally writing a
series on the Glass family. It is not as if we did not know this, but the
readers at the time probably did not. If I am not mistaked, the debate on
Franny and Zooey questioned whether Franny is intended to be the same
character in both stories. The part of the jacket I was reffering to
(again - not the part about his current home and companion) would seem to
say yes, and obviously so. He intended them to be read as the same
character (thus the tidbit on the jacket) and therefor I would conclude he
wrote them to be the same character. Sorry if I'm kicking a dead horse.

Actually, in this case it didn't take only as long as it did to read your
post, but only because some young trainees in our office recently made a
poster of this very quote. Otherwise, I don't think I would have placed it
to as Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, of which I have fond memories.

Ah the time when he said he lived in Westport with his dog? I would say,
with an almost straight face, that it is a highly relevant detail.
