Hi all,

For what it's worth, García Márquez has repeatedly remarked on the magic
performed by his two translators (first Gregory Rabassa and later, now, Edith
Grossman). He swears there are times when he likes "his" books in English more
than in Spanish, including *One Hundred Years...*.

I'm reading the first installment of his autobiography now in English, having
read about a third of it in Spanish first. It's an amazing accomplishment,
both in its original version and in this exquisite translation.

I'm also reading a book called *Without Alibi* that has a few other things to
say about translation in spots, but never mind.

All the best,

--John

PS: Speaking of translations, there's a new one of Don Quixote out, by the
same Edith Grossman -- I've only looked at it in the bookstore, but it'll be my
Christmas reading I think.
