Matt -- ever read the Onion article, "Grad student deconstructs take out
menu"?

I think we need to speak of what about Holden is being communicated by
_Catcher_, then talk about what can be communicated via translation and
what's lost.

I think what _Catcher_ communicates is Holden's attitude toward and view
of the world.

Much of the attitude is communicated through Holden's speech patterns, I
think, and to the extent that it is, I think this attitude is lost in
translation. But I don't think all of the attitude is lost in
translation -- it's probably more of a cumulative effect than immediate.
May depend upon the individual reader. Holden's view of the world --
what he chooses to notice and what he chooses to ignore -- I don't think
is lost at all.
