John O. points out that he believes there is something to be said for being
a part of the times in which you live, and of course I agree.

I take it that understanding something of the times from which my own sprung
is worthwhile, and that the literature produced in those times is still
immediately pertinent and even immediately present to me in my own time.
Additionally, that being a part of the times in which I live does not
necessarily coincide with (though it can include) being a reader of much
contemporary literature, especially considering how few of those with whom I
share these times do read it. Reading, for instance, Shakespeare, might be
even more conducive to being a part of the times in which I live than
reading whoever is called the best of the youngest generation of writers.
