By typical Spielberg, I guess you mean straight-forward, 'un-ironic' narrative, and, yes, this movie was typical in that sense. But it was a great movie. The opening scene was indeed incredible. The scene that haunted me, however, was the death by Hitler Jugend knife. There were many other scenes that stuck with me for weeks.
