As commercial and mainstream Speilberg is, I do
believe him and his generation of filmmakers deserve a
lot of credit for changing the way films are made. As
this new generation of indie film makers come in, they
will most likely continue to revolutionize film
making, but as they grow old and complacent, another
generation will come to take their place. Also, yes
the first opening scene of saving private ryan was a
great scene, but I disagree that it's the best(maybe
the best in terms of recreation of battle) scene in
the film. I loved the scene where tom hanks, sizemore,
chaplin, and ribisi are talking at night and hanks
goes on about how every person that dies lets 10 or a
100 people live on and then ribisi talks about how he
used to pretend like he was asleep when his mom would
come check in on him at nights. to me, that was one of
the best scenes. just my two cents. I think what's
great about filmmakers like speilberg and lucas isn't
so much that they are these deep thinkers, but they
try to tap into the younger generations. They try to
give them hope and inspiration before they grow too
old and too cold for it(maybe I've become a little
like that). But I think with saving private ryan, the
color purple, and schindler's list, speilberg is
trying to say he can do more than just spin fairy
tales.
