Yes, "The Thin Red Line" was more metaphysical and more surreal perhaps than "Saving Private Ryan", but I still find a sort of poetry in motion style of directing with Malick. If you've seen "Days of Heaven" there's a lot of emphasis placed on the different elements: earth, air, water, fire, etc... and strong comparisons are drawn between man and beast. "TTRL" had some great landscape shots of grassy hills flowing like ocean waves in the wind. Very good in my opinion.
