I would like to weigh in with what may probably be considered a superficial reaction to The Thin Red Line in comparison to some of the other postings. First of all, I haven't read the book - seeing the movie makes me want to - maybe I should have included that on my 'Books 2000' post but I'd forgotten about it. I'm old enough to remember when it was a first line Book-of-the-Month club selection. Second, I really have to see it again because when I did see it, my consciousness was altered; by two pints of Fullers rather than hemp. Though the cinematography made a strong first impression on me as with others who've posted here, I kept thinking, this is too serious (yep you've reached the superficial part...), watching it somehow reminded me more of a Vietnam movie (shades of Apocalypse now perhaps? I did not see Platoon) than of any World War II epic. It was upsetting, as it was supposed to be. My only thought is that I'm probably going to have to see it on video since it's probably not in the theatres (New York area) anymore. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
