Possibly - even probably, given that from memory it's a long time before we learn Boo Boo's real name (my memory is terrible on such things - is it Beatrice? Calling any child Beatrice is a definite boo boo :) ) In some ways, maybe this is Salinger's way of attempting to induct us into the fold, of assuming that we already know who's who, their nicknames and personal quirks. In another way, it has quite the opposite effect, of pushing the reader out of the line of familiarity by actively excluding them from proceedings - just like those annoying people who give you a long boring story about a group of their friends who you don't know and don't care!
