In my recollection, _American Beauty_ doesn't take aim some
overreaching vision of an American Dream. I have just admitted to
Mattis, off list, that perhaps it is I who need to see the film again,
but as I recall the targets of individual critiques in the project
would be better described individually, specifically, than generally
as American cultural cliches. The film celebrates more than it
criticizes, and when it does criticize, it takes aim not at character
types, but at misconceptions of character types. The popular blond
snob character, for instance, turns out to be delicately human, just
as much as the rebellious, snob-hating daughter.
