What we have here is nothing more or less than Hamlet's immortal question - to be or not to be. It lies within a person's own mind as to which of these directions they choose to take - strange as it may seem, in many forms of drug counselling it's a question they ask you. Would you like to go up, or would you like to go down? It's your choice and you have to make it now, and we'll stand by whichever direction you choose. The characters of Buddy and Seymour are the opposite sides of the same coin, the one who chose to be and the one who chose not to be. Which is, perhaps, why JDS has managed in some ways to straddle both states himself in the ensuing years.
