It is surely not my imagination that this is the most perplexing of the 9 Stories. No, I'm wrong - `Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes' takes that medal. Never did like that one.

All I can offer is Bessie Glass and her nourishing bowls of chicken soup which Salinger, son of a doting Jewish mother, surely got offered him after such traumas as the breakdown of his Comanche leader and dropping all his marbles on the floor of the museum. Perhaps - as it seems in this story - it's simply a symbol of nurturing.
