Ah, come on...

I'd feel just like Scottie said if one of my daughter's chose to become a
Nun. BUT, that being said, I'm not Catholic. And I know quite a few
Catholic families who would be Delighted to have a son become a priest, or a
daughter a nun.

The important things about these vocations isn't so much the celibacy or
poverty (meaning you don't own anything yourself, but are still taken care of
well enough) but the fact that you're giving your life to service. Tens of
thousands of men and women in all faiths (and some in none) do this every
year. Catholics do so in a unique fashion, but the choice for service itself
is not that unusual.

I also know at least two people -- one young man and one young woman -- who
went to the convent and the monastery and were eventually sent back home.
It's not for everyone and they know it. If I were you, Scottie, counseling
these people who had chosen so wrongly, I'd wonder about the defect in the
person that caused them to pursue such a vocation against their natures to
begin with (their parents? their church? their upbringing? Not good
enough. We still think and choose for ourselves).

It's always easier to blame the church. Course, that type of thinking is
probably the problem to begin with. It's always easier to be a victim...
