...In which John Updike Rides Again:

Perhaps this was mentioned in the recent Updike thread and I apologize
if I'm repeating. "Updike" has been in my kill file since 1993.
Anyay, he's gone and written another book. This time, it's about the
events that precede Shakespeare's _Hamlet_ (or the Ur-Hamlet, if you
please, but let's not all be pedantic asses at once).

That's right. A novel about the events that lead up to _Hamlet_.
It's called _Gertrude and Claudius_. Now, with Jane Smiley taking a
victory lap in the background, the good folks at Knopf, in cooperation
with Mr. Updike himself, have devised a contest as part of the book's
publicity scheme: write your own prequil to _Hamlet_ and win the new
book, plus some other Updike titles. (Mabye they'll stick a $20
inside one of the covers. Who knows?)

Anyway, I know this list is crawling with fiction writers, so I
thought I'd pass on the information. 'Specially since the
write-you-own-prequil parameters are so intriguing: a *short
story*...a short story of 500-700 words. Short story? Long
paragraph? Same thing, I guess.

Sharpen up those quills, amigos,
