I didn't like that particular book -- part of it had to do with my
expectations. It seemed to be a summary of Salinger's fiction and scholarly
issues surrounding it -- meaning I would expect it to be descriptive in tone.
But in with the description was a description of the author's
position...which isn't bad, but sounded as if French wanted us to believe he
was providing The authoritative take on some of the issues. His tone was
especially disturbing because I didn't feel he represented opposing
viewpoints fairly or in enough detail.

But I only read the book once, and still found it pretty informative. And
when I wasn't bristling under having his reading seemingly pushed down my
throat I found the book useful.
