Apocolypse Now is so loosely based on Heart of Darkness, that is the two seem
completely independent of each other. The only thing that really remains the
same is Mr. Kurtz and the whole "savage" theme. It kinda sucks though,
because I saw Apocolypse Now before I read Heart of Darkness, so when I read
the book, I see Vietnam instead of Africa at the turn of the century. Oh
well. The movie, I think, is probably the best and most surreal war movie
ever made.

I think movies based on books should stay as loosely based as possible. It
makes the movie seem SOMEWHAT original.
