We had TCitR assigned around 1965, in 9th grade, with Huck Finn and (I
think) A Separate Peace. The music playing in the background was more Simon
& Garfunkle than Bob Dylan, but certain pleasures are--or would have
been--wasted on the young. I wasn't quite ready for Bob until later the
same year (which seemed, at the time, to be an eternity away) when I
suddenly became a super-sophisticated 14 year old....
But Bookends did OK too. And, to be honest, Benjamin from The Graduate was
almost as much of a role model for me as Holden or Zooey (if it's not
anathema to say so here....)
Cheers,
Paul
