Zooey called it a "sacred tangerine" and chided Franny for not being able to
recognize it as one when she saw it (and for refusing to accept it). The
tangerine itself is probably not symbolic of anything, but the act of giving
it and Franny's reaction may have been emblematic of her not accepting the
love she's being offered because some of her other expectations aren't being
met.
