Wounded and vulnerable to the bone is a good way to describe franklin. His suffering does appear to be soul suffering. Ginnie, on the other hand, has tasted just a little of franklin's life and she has compassion for him and she doesn't want to turn out like her sister after viewing her through franklins eyes and his pain. I haven't been able to figure out what the conversation between Eric and Ginnie has to do with anything. He seems to be gay, but I just don't know where he fits in the story. Anyone have any ideas on what Salinger was doing with this part of the story?

P.S. Is this an attempt to get people to reread all of the less often discussed Nine Stories for deeper meaning? -----------------------------------------------

No, it's really just an attempt to understand better a couple of stories that take quite a bit of unpacking. And, well ... it's kinda fun.
