Jim, yes I agree very strongly that editing for mechanical error should
not impede a writer's composition progress and that it's often a layer of
editing that comes close to the end of a piece of writing. And, yes,
getting help makes a lot of sense--I'm currently working as a writing
tutor in a small catholic college and beleive that helping students build
a critical awareness of their writing is some of the most teaching fun I
could have and I hope it's useful for the students.

However, I also think that how we articulate thinking is so closely
entwined with how use language that it's wrong to separate the value of
one from the other. That's where I thought you were heading, but I was
wrong and see more clearly now that we are probably on the same
page/screen...list! will
