I assume that most bananafishers (and even
most nonbananafishers) have at some point or
another had suicidal ideations. Perhaps you
lost a job. Maybe you were summarily dumped
by a loved one or teased by the rest of the
class. Perhaps you've even been sucked into
the vortex of major depression. Surely, though,
at some point, you have seriously contemplated
permanently closing up shop.

Maybe you would not actually do it, but
nevertheless, the fantasy of being dead was
strangely, seductively soothing. (And I'm
not talking about those sulky, I'll-show-you
fantasies featuring ex-lovers wailing over
an open casket.)

I guess all this is a way of expressing my
surprise at the apparent consensus that suicide
requires some extreme mental condition. I'm
not convinced that it's really so far away.
