Why is Seymour such a prude, you ask?

Well, old Seymour more or less spells it out for us in the story he tells
young Sybil. His story begins with the fictional "Bananafish", which may as
well be called "Cigarfish" for its obvious Freudian symbolism. In a clear
allusion to Vagina Dentata, the Bananafish, doomed by his insatiable
appetite, burrows into a hole where he meets a painful and certain death.

Let's just say a certain product from Pfizer might have helped Seymour
through his anxiety.

In "Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters" Seymour states in his journal that
"apparently there is something wrong with" him as he hasn't seduced Muriel.

So, all ye oracles of wisdom, was there? The quick answer is no, not just
on that info, but a girl I know recently stated (in an unrelated
conversation, but which was the impetus for this question) that "if a guy
were around a girl he thought he might like and didn't try something, then
there'd be something wrong." I felt somewhat relieved, as I had tried
something, but I'm not totally convinced on the subject. In my case trying
something was pretty stupid, actually (anyone getting the impression this
isn't just about Seymour?), but at some point the old natural urges have to
take over, no matter what. So was Seymour some kind of fruit or what? Was
he saving himself for marriage, or did he just not care?

lots of questions
