Indeed, as my oculist -- who, when young, committed several dozen eye
operations upon James Joyce himself -- will attest. (You can look it
up.)

Dr. Svevo has been treating me now, these last several months (to be
properly specific, he has been tending to what remains of my retinas),
with an intensity I had previously thought lost to the world of western
medicine, all in what I fear is the hopeless task of undoing the result
of my visit to chez Bowman in that dark month of November.

Indeed, I thought I knew the meaning of "dark," but nothing that can be
expressed in words does justice to the resulting, smoldering, effect on
one's orbs of a visit to Scottie.

Many of you have asked publicly and privately for me to write some type
of description of my visit that fateful day, to satisfy your curiosity.
But I'm afraid the narrative might lure some of our more impressionable
readers into a visit to Cork, where that "black sun" would be turned
upon one or more unsuspecting members of our community. I love and
cherish you all too much to let that happen. So for the time being, I
shall keep these secrets to myself, where they must remain as hidden
as I would conceal details about a productive visit to Cornish.

I'm sure you understand my reluctance. For details about my state, I
will need to direct you to Dr. Svevo, who can speak of the brutal results
far more eloquently than I can ever hope to do. You can reach him at:

        drsvevo@dachshund.com

He takes a while to respond, but eventually he answers.

Touch-typingly yours -- as if I had some other choice, these days,
