Subject: And hello to you too

Dr Rovira would have you believe that anyone
who writes that way about himself must be in fact
an exquisite, if antique, dish. Only a hunk, he wishes
to imply, would possess the assurance to afford such
an extravagant self- caricature.
Well, Lucia, I’m afraid the cartoon is all too close to
the grim reality. From behind that repellant mask,
a Quasimodo Redivivorovirus peeps out, hoping against
hope for one tiny sign of transforming love from his Esmeralda.
But Quasimodo, alas, he’s condemned to remain.
Cecilia will confirm all this. She has devoted much of
the pious residue of her days in the convent to the Rovira charity.
You’ll note that she never mocks or teases him & treats each
of his weird caprices with a reverent, if somewhat unnecessary,
solemnity. An angel, if ever there was one.
The same girl will also confirm that any attempt to convey
my own physical presence is quite futile. Neither old nor young,
large nor small, my interlocutors have no idea – dazzled as they are
by the black sun of my attention focused back like some terrible,
loving eye upon themselves.
An experience, Lucy, no one ever quite gets over.
Scottie B.
