We aren't speaking of reality here. We are not speaking of the
90's. We are speaking of a work of fiction in the 50's. If someone wants
to place a homosexual character in a piece of writing in the 50's and not
out-right say it, and not have it as a main theme, but rather an ambiquous
point, how would one do it? I am not judging anyone out there, or saying
that all people who cross their legs and watch Disney are gay. Christ, to
what ends would that get me? And truly, do I care? NO. I am not
speaking of my VIEWS on a specific group of people in society, instead I
am examining a piece of literature for what it is, in its era. Truly, I
think the Eskimo's piece is one of J.D.'s lesser works. That's my
opinion, Please, do attack that if you believe otherwise for that is what
this newsgroup is for. We are not debating gender politics here, if
someone wants to do so please e-mail me specifically. I have done a lot
of research into the subject. But what we have here isn't even a debate
about gender politics, it has suddenly been taken personally.
A question, if I were to point out overtly-stereotypical macho
characteristics in a male character would I be a heterophobic? Or if I
were to point out dainty characteristics in a female character, something
making her extremely feminine and precious, would I be demeaning women?
NO, if anything I would be understanding how th author wanted his/her
character to be perceived. As I am doing here.
Reality and fiction are two seperate worlds.
None the less, I stated before that I'm through with this topic. It's not
horribly interesting now because people have taken it all too personally.
I stand where I stand: I believe the character is to be perceived as gay,
I believe that he is the unattainable, I am not a homophobic, I am not
gay, I am not fourty-five years old, I am not living in France. What do
all these things matter? They are facts, they are what I think and
what I am and they should truly have very little barin on others lives.
I do not wish to sway anyone's opinion. And I suppose that is truly the final
word.
