I too have always believed Seymour was deeply affected by the war--but I have always
thought that of JDS and have remained cautious not to bring too much of him into
"Banannafish" (but perhaps that has been my stumbling block). The "Big Two Hearted
River" comparison is eye opening for me (good one, tim). I can't keep from imagining
a parallel adventure (not wanting to screw with Hemingway's masterpiece) where
both Nick and Seymour make that trip to the "good place." Yes, I think that would have
been miraculous medicine for Seymour. But what of the spiritual symbol the fish? And
what's with the Bananna fish stuffing itself to death? A stab at psychoanalysis? What
does this say of Seymour? Many more questions, but I am at work. Big brother. Must
go.
