Yes, they met in France after D-Day. Hemingway is said to have shot
the head off a chicken to show off a gun of his; a fictionalized
version of this appears in "Esme," where the narrator is disgusted
by his buddy.

I have a copy of the letter JDS wrote to Hemingway. (It's at the JFK
library in Boston, as part of their Hemingway collection.) It was a
sweet letter -- sweet if you imagine JDS writing *fan mail* -- and
indicates that he hopes to find his own version of Catherine, the nurse
in "A Farewell to Arms."

This episode is covered briefly in Carlos Baker's bio of Hemingway. I
suspect it's also in the Ian Hamilton bio of JDS, but I don't recall
exactly, and don't have my copy at hand. 8-(
